  Up one level

In February 2002 I went on an Ian Allan visit to the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras.

On 8th February 2002 I was able to visit the old Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. This is a view taken from the Ladies Smoking room back along the hotel frontage.
We started the tour in the main entance lobby - this is the doorway into the rest of the hotel...
... and the corridor takes you to the foot of main staircase. Notice that the 'two-tone' colouration of the outside is repeated in the arches.
This is the foot of the main stairs. A lot of these picture were taken without flash - hence the glare from the windows and the emergency lighting.
The view from the bottom of the main stairs looking up. The fancy ironwork under the stairs is in fact plaster (if I remember correctly). Notice the wyvern boss on the wall at top left.

Close up of the wyvern as well as the 1st floor arches and stair brackets. Notice that the carving on each arch is different.
The arches on the 2nd floor and more fancy 'iron' work.
Now it was possible to get a good view of the panels on the ceiling above the stairs. These have been restored to their former glory.
The panels to the left and right show the Virtues...
...and the cetre panel has the Midland Railway coat of arms.

The arches over the corridors are impressive (even with the ducting and wires added by British Railways). This is on the 2nd floor...
...and this is another 2nd floor arch (again with added features).
The 1st floor arches weren't as elaborate as the second floor.
These are the arches into the stairwell from the 1st floor down to the ground. This was the original stairwell until the grand staircase was opened.
Over the 1st floor staircase is this ceiling panel - grimy but impressive.

The hall between the main entrance and the stairs still has this wall paint. A patch has been cleaned up (there's a layer of shellac over the top of the paint that was clear but has darkened over the years) and the colours are still vibrant.
This is an example of where the wall paint has had its covering paint removed - this is on the 1st floor near the Dining Room.
This is the bay window in one of the larger rooms on the 2nd floor.
A view of the next-door rival. Taken through a very dirty window!
This is a general view of the Ladies Smoking room, which is above the entrace hall.

A view down the columns in the Ladies Smoking room
This was the old ground floor coffee lounge. When converted to offices by British Railways a false ceiling was installed - it hung from supports installed in the holes, and the height is shown by the white paint on the walls.
